Marijuana

People who smoke marijuana daily or weekly double their risk of developing a psychotic illness There arenew findings on the neurobiology of cannabis, its effects on mental health and its interaction with severe mental illness .

Molecular studies have shown that tetrahydrocannabinol, the active component of cannabis, increases release of dopamine in the mesolimbic pathway. Given the suggested relation between increased mesolimbic dopamine and positive symptoms of schizophrenia, such observations provide support for the hypothesis that cannabis may act as a risk factor for schizophrenia .

But marijuana is prevalent in society, more than people think.

Cannabis is also the most increasingly used illicit drug in the world in recent years.

There is some evidence to suggest an increase in the regularity with which people use cannabis.

The drug remains less of a problem than alcohol and tobacco.
